You cannot manufacture power
You cannot trade peace
You cannot buy happiness off a shelf
And you certainly cannot barter love
But of course
You think you can
You want to believe very much that you can
And you will go to great lengths to prove it to yourself
And you will convince yourself that your efforts have paid off
At least for a while
But sooner or later you realize
It ain’t workin’ no more
That, truth be told, it never did
You thought your bravado was power
You thought your ‘grin and bear’, your polite acquiescence, your silence, was peace
You thought your latest toy would keep you entertained and delighted for longer than it did
You thought you could offer sex or understanding or acceptance or company, or status or money for love
But you found out, much to your bitter, bitter dismay
That none of it ever had a snowball’s chance
So
Where to from here, you wonder
What have I left to give?
What other tricks have I got in my bag?
What other skills must I learn?
What other currencies must I purchase?
And, of course, as long as you’re willing
There’s someone selling
And someone buying
And so you go again
And again
And again
And again
Each time fighting and denying
The truth that is calling you to itself
No! No! No! you say.
I will do it my goddamn way
Even if it kills me
But you’re already dead, Truth tells you
You’re the walking dead.
Come to me and I will give you Life
Don’t you see, there is no other Life but me
And, my Beloved, you and I are one and the same
You have exhausted all your tricks, skills and currencies
You have nothing left to give
Because, my Beloved, there was nothing to give in the first place
And, there was nothing to barter for, to acquire, to receive, to possess
Nothing at all
For you are all that you could possibly desire
And infinitely more.
How should I know?
Because you and I are IT, honey
And, pardon the cliché, but
We are
Full of IT.
Interested in Mentoring?
EACH MONTH, I work with a small number of people (about 6) in a mentoring capacity. It is highly personalized and uses a body-centred phenomenological (lived experience rather than theoretical) approach and draws on mindfulness and reflective practices. If this sounds interesting to you, you can find out more here.
