Attitude is everything, isn’t it?
I can look at something and dread it or I can look at it and honestly think:
Hey, this is an opportunity to get to know someone better, to really get curious about them and keep a really open mind about what they can tell me about themselves instead of presuming I already know and sometimes that I know them better than they know themselves.
Yeah, I have found myself doing that often. The presuming to know thing.
I have also found that people love it when you have an attitude/demeanour of sincere curiosity, not an idle, intrusive invasion of privacy. I’ve seen them literally melt, soften, drop their guard, smile…that last one is the biggest giveaway. Or sometimes they get very quiet, as if savouring the experience of feeling that they really matter, that they’re actually being listened to, without judgement. That they are not just tolerated as an inevitable actor in MY life story…
I know I have experienced the deliciousness of someone being genuinely and respectfully curious about me.
Doesn’t happen often but when it does, it’s beautiful.
Not to mention how equally wonderful and revelatory it is when we get genuinely curious about ourselves instead of presuming we already know who we are…we don’t.
I intend for you as I do for myself a day of delicious curiosity.
Interested in Mentoring?
EACH MONTH, I work with a small number of people (about 6) in a mentoring capacity. It is highly personalized and uses a body-centred phenomenological (lived experience rather than theoretical) approach and draws on mindfulness and reflective practices. If this sounds interesting to you, you can find out more here.
